WHY MFG?
Many initiatives and programmes have been developed in the world with the goal of societal upliftment and advancement. The microfinance project is one among the most prominent initiative worth to mention. In the late 1990s, the programme acquired an international attention and became the subject of considerable discussions and research by socio-economic experts.
The 'Bangladesh Grameen Movement', implemented in Bangladesh under the leadership of Professor Muhammad Yunus, was pointed out as a model for this. The Global Microcredit Summit in 2010, organised by the American President Bill Clinton's wife, 'Hilary Clinton', with the intention of rescuing 100 million people out of poverty from hundred countries had created excitement in the service sector to a large extend. In this accord, the Bangladesh model of Self-help groups with 20 members each were formed, which could successfully portray remarkable changes. through its activities. This soon became a globally accepted model to be a part of global efforts in the field of the world's poverty alleviation activities. On the occasion of a comprehensive assessment of 'SHG Operation and Performance', Bangladesh Grameen Bank argued that some corrections in this model are necessary. They suggested that reducing the number of members in the groups is necessary to achieve the goal faster and to provide better results. They claimed that smaller groups of four to five people would be more efficient and would speed up the process of reaching the desired outcome. This has sparked thoughtful debates in the field of economics as well as professional evaluations and analysis. The World Bank concurred with the Bangladesh Rural Bank's argument and the project's activities proceeded under the name. Bangladesh Grameen Model which was a major breakthrough in this sector.
Further, it was suggested that Joint Liability Groups (JLGs) would be preferable to Self-Help Groups which was followed by many discussions, conversations, analyses, and studies. The concept quickly gained popularity and attained more power and prominence with the strong support from the banking sector.
But, it could neither substantiate the development of all the individuals who were part of these groups nor the progress of their family members.
Hence it was concluded that a group with a common interest or with equal interest in the progress of each and every member would be more ideal. This identified the Family, being the smallest and the strongest unified group in a society to be the most appropriate entity for such a structured grouping and thus the idea of MFG evolved.
Creating a group within the family would ensure a better scope of connect among its members and will be easier to identify the needful option for a sustainable growth. To provide the required assistance in training or finance, considering each member of the family, would definitely result in individual development. Understanding and evaluating each family with respect to their past socio-economic status will make it easy to adopt the required measures to bring in progress. It would be much easier and the progress will be remarkable when the members are closely related and interested in their mutual development. This MFG mission with an impactful action plan will undoubtedly lead the society to the zenith of development.
Importance of MFG (Member Family Group).
MFG is the realization of the fact that a transformation, to be effective in the country or the society, has to begin within the family.
The prime feature of this mission is to consider a family as the base unit, identify the need in a family and to effectively intervene for a resolution. It is designed in a broader perspective starting from the general growth of an individual viz childcare, hygiene, nutrition, health care, education, skill training, higher education assistance, vocational training, help for entrepreneurship, loan assistance, savings schemes, helping hand for the elderly, mental health and environmental protection, all of which can be made available to the MFG members through specified schemes. The hope and expectation are to create a model that could ensure an improvised system best suited to empower the society.
